Zonda (USA-632) arrived safely back in port to complete the first race of the qualification calendar in what turned into a grueling battle of attrition.
Of the 25 boats that started the race, only 11 managed to finish due to the difficult conditions brought about by Mistral winds which peaked at 43 knots on board Zonda. The winds began to build the afternoon of May 23rd, with the real storm hitting that night. The winds didn't drop below 35 knots for 24 hours and then remained above 30 knots for most of the next day. Although Andy is disappointed in the 11th place finish, the main objective was to finish the race and earn the valuable qualification miles. Zonda showed good speed potential during the first two days of the race, so Andy hopes to be able to move up the rankings in the next races. |
