WHAT IS A MINI?

The official name for these amazing boats is the Open 6.50 Class, but they are more commonly referred to as just 'Minis'. According to the Class Rules, there are two types of Minis: Prototypes and Series
(Production). Both rules are what is referred to as box rules, which means certain important criteria are limited, such as length, draft, beam, but anything that is not expressly prohibited is allowed. As long as designers keep the boat "within the box", anything goes. The prototypes (protos) are truly the no-holds barred division, built with carbon fiber and sporting high tech design elements such as canting keels, water ballast tanks and asymmetric dagger boards. The protos are the faster of the two classes, but they are also far more expensive.

In order to keep the Class accesible to a wider range of competitors, the Series class was created and provides a lower cost alternative. Among the important restrictions to reduce cost, Series boats cannot be built with carbon fiber and cannot have moveable ballast or carbon fiber masts.
